What is Heartburn?

Heartburn is a burning, pressure-like sensation in the chest caused by acid moving up from the stomach into the oesophagus. Many people feel it after eating, lying down, or late at night. Occasional mild heartburn can be normal. But when it happens often, feels intense, or affects daily routines, it becomes a medical condition that needs proper care.

For some people, heartburn shows up as a strong burning feeling behind the breastbone. For others, it feels like food is stuck, a sour taste in the mouth, bloating, chest tightness or coughing after meals. It can disrupt sleep, concentration, appetite and everyday comfort. Heartburn is extremely common, and it can be treated with the right medical plan.

Types of Heartburn

Heartburn is a burning, pressure-like sensation in the chest caused by acid moving up from the stomach into the oesophagus.

Heartburn feels different for everyone, but doctors commonly recognise several patterns based on duration, frequency and triggers.

1. Occasional Heartburn

This type happens from time to time, usually after certain foods or large meals. It is mild and temporary, but frequent episodes may lead to ongoing reflux.

2. Chronic Heartburn (Reflux / GERD-like Symptoms)

This involves repeated or long-term heartburn. Symptoms return several times a week and can include throat irritation, chronic cough and disrupted sleep. It often requires medical management.

3. Night-Time Heartburn

This happens mainly when lying down or sleeping. Acid can move upwards more easily at night, causing burning, coughing or a sour taste. It may affect sleep quality.

4. Food-Triggered Heartburn

Triggered by specific foods such as spicy meals, acidic foods, chocolate, coffee, alcohol or large portions. Symptoms appear shortly after eating.

5. Medication-Related Heartburn

Some medications can irritate the stomach lining or relax the lower oesophageal sphincter, causing reflux. These include anti-inflammatory medicines, hormone tablets and certain antibiotics.

6. Stress-Related Heartburn

Stress does not directly cause reflux, but it can worsen sensitivity, slow digestion and increase stomach acid, making symptoms more noticeable.

Common Symptoms of Heartburn

Heartburn is a burning, pressure-like sensation in the chest caused by acid moving up from the stomach into the oesophagus.

Heartburn affects people in different ways, but symptoms usually fall into three main groups: upper-chest discomfort, digestive symptoms, and mouth/throat symptoms.

Upper-Chest Discomfort

These are the sensations people most commonly notice:

  • A burning feeling behind the breastbone
  • Chest discomfort that worsens after eating or lying down
  • Tightness or pressure in the chest
  • Pain that may feel like it’s spreading to the throat
  • A hot or uncomfortable sensation rising upward
  • Symptoms that flare at night or when bending over

Digestive Symptoms

Heartburn often comes with signs linked to digestion and stomach acid:

  • Regurgitation, a sour or bitter taste as acid moves upward
  • Bloating or feeling overly full
  • Nausea after meals
  • Burping more often than usual
  • Food or liquid coming back up the throat
  • Discomfort after large or spicy meals

Mouth & Throat Symptoms

Because acid can irritate the upper airway, some people notice:

  • Sore or irritated throat
  • Hoarse or raspy voice
  • Persistent cough, especially at night
  • A sour taste in the mouth
  • Bad breath
  • A feeling of a “lump” in the throat
  • Difficulty swallowing when symptoms flare.

Risk Factors

You may be more at risk if you/your:

  • Eat large or spicy meals often
  • Drink caffeine, alcohol or fizzy drinks
  • Smoke or vape
  • Lie down soon after eating
  • Are pregnant
  • Have a higher body weight
  • Have stress-related digestive tension
  • Take certain medications
  • Eat irregularly or late at night
  • Have a history of reflux or indigestion
  • Wear tight clothing around the stomach

Treatment Options for Heartburn

Heartburn is treatable, and many people improve with the right approach. At HelloGP, treatment plans are personalised based on your symptoms and lifestyle

1. Psychological/Supportive Therapies

  • Posture and meal timing changes
  • Education on reflux-safe routines
  • Support in identifying food triggers
  • Stress awareness for digestion
  • These strategies help reduce flare-ups and improve comfort.

2. Medication

Your GP may recommend medication if symptoms are significant or affecting daily life. Options include:

  • Antacids
  • Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs)
  • Alginates for throat protection
  • Medication review if current medicines worsen reflux

Medication may be short-term or ongoing, depending on the severity.

3. Lifestyle and Self-Management

  • Small, consistent shifts can make a big difference:
  • Eating smaller meals
  • Avoid lying down for 2–3 hours after eating
  • Limiting spicy, oily, or acidic foods
  • Reducing caffeine and alcohol
  • Sleeping with the head elevated
  • Balancing meal times
  • Walking after meals
  • Stopping smoking or vaping
  • Drinking enough water
  • Keeping a food diary

Your HelloGP doctor will guide you through these at your own pace.
